Six picturesque beaches across Northumberland and Tyne and Wear to visit this summer

We’re completely spoilt for choice with picturesque sandy beaches here on our doorstep along the North East coast, which comes as a surprise to a lot of people, who think the south has the monopoly on beaches! We have selected six of our favourite for you to visit this summer.

1) Beadnell Bay

Beadnell Bay

This stunning beach has been chosen as the north of England's Beach of The Year, according to the Times and Sunday Times!

The 16th edition of the Times and Sunday Times Best UK Beaches guide was published online last month. The journalists travelled 5,583 miles, visited 543 beaches and sampled 17 chip suppers to discover the nation’s superior stretches of sand for this year’s regional guide. Chris Haslam reports 'Beadnell’s beach offers shelter on an otherwise exposed coast. Backed by low dunes and protected by a hook of headland, the waters can be as flat as the Med here when neighbouring beaches are being thumped by the North Sea. Beadnell is also becoming quite the gastronomic hotspot, with upmarket dining and cocktails at the Beadnell Towers Hotel, locally caught fish at the Landing, Geoff’s Fish and Chips van near the village shop, and authentic Italian pizza from the BAE food truck in the beach car park.'

2) Bamburgh

Bamburgh

Voted The Best Seaside Destination in the UK for the fourth year running in the annual Which? Survey. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty, clean, unspoiled sands, clear waters, and historical significance, the pristine beach at Bamburgh offers visitors breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere. Its golden sands and rolling dunes create a picturesque setting that is perfect for a variety of recreational activities.

One of the most striking features of Bamburgh Beach is the imposing Bamburgh Castle, which overlooks the shoreline. This ancient fortress, dating back to the 6th century, adds a dramatic backdrop to the scenic landscape. The castle, once home to the Kings of Northumbria, stands on a rocky outcrop and provides a glimpse into the region’s rich history. It is open to visitors, offering a chance to explore its storied halls and learn about its past.

3) Low Newton Beach

low newton beach

Located in the picturesque village of Low Newton-by-the-Sea is a hidden gem along the northeast coast. This charming beach is known for its tranquil beauty and wide sandy shores, and it offers a serene retreat for visitors seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Located just a stone’s throw from Low Newton Beach, The Ship Inn is a quintessential English pub with a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere. This family-run establishment is renowned for its warm hospitality, delicious food, and exceptional views of the beach and sea. One of the highlights of The Ship Inn is its own microbrewery, which produces a range of craft beers that perfectly complement the pub's hearty meals. Just a short distance inland from Low Newton Beach, The Joiners Arms in High Newton-by-the-Sea offers a luxurious yet laid-back retreat for visitors. In addition to its excellent food and accommodations, The Joiners Arms is known for its vibrant social atmosphere. The bar area is a lively spot where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a drink, listen to live music, or simply relax by the fire cooler months.
