Approached from A1 and located on the main Edinburgh to London rail link, the gorgeous town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most northerly of Northumberland’s towns and is just 3 miles from the border with Scotland. The pretty town has sandy beaches, lovely riverside walks and cycle paths and a plethora of nearby golf courses. Set on the River Tweed, the history of Berwick is turbulent; its location means that it changed hands between the English and the Scottish many times. The design of the town and the Elizabethan Walls were built to keep Scots from entering the town and now provide an excellent circuit on which to survey the market town. Climb onboard The Border Rose with Berwick Boat Trips, where you can sail beneath the magnificent Grade I listed, Royal Border Bridge and into the mouth of the river for some seal and dolphin spotting.
Roam the riverbanks for spectacular views and taste exquisite seafood in one of Berwick’s restaurants and pubs that line the cobbled and bunting-filled streets of the town centre.
