The town became well known as a seaside resort in the mid-1800s when a group of investors built the original wooden pier and this is reflected in the stunning Georgian townhouses that grace the seafront. However, its heyday was in the Victorian era and the town abounds with attractive Victorian properties as well as more modern apartments, detached and semi-detached properties.

Attractions

Today the remaining part of the pier is a major attraction and includes charming eateries, independent shops and children’s funfair rides. There are beautiful Victorian Gardens and the beach was awarded a blue flag. There is also a jetty and a small harbour as well as sailing, rowing, angling tennis and football clubs.

Schools

Local primary schools include Herne Junior and Reculver Primary, rated Outstanding by Ofsted, and the Herne Bay High School that specialises in sport and includes hockey, gymnastics and cricket clubs.
